Expertise in Hard-to-Machine Alloys

While we frequently machine standard aluminum, brass, and carbon steels, ForceBeyond specializes in the extreme-precision machining of high-temperature and work-hardening alloys.

Material Category Core Alloys Machined Machinability Focus & Applications
Superalloys Inconel 718, Inconel 625, Hastelloy Notoriously difficult due to rapid work-hardening and high shear strength. Requires rigid setups and low cutting speeds. Ideal for aerospace turbines.
Titanium Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) Highly abrasive to cutting tools with poor thermal conductivity. Requires high-pressure coolant. Critical for aerospace and medical implants.
Stainless & Duplex 17-4 PH, 316L, 2205, 2507 Prone to work-hardening and gummy chips. Demands specialized tooling geometries. Used heavily in oil & gas and fluid control valves.
Copper & Brass ECO BRASS (C69300), C11000 Highly machinable, allowing for rapid cycle times and brilliant surface finishes. Used for electronic components and lead-free plumbing.

Tier-1.5 Integration: The "Cast & Forge to Machine" Advantage

ForceBeyond’s most significant value proposition is our Tier-1.5 Manufacturing Model. By housing world-class casting, forging, and CNC machining under a single quality umbrella, we eliminate the risks associated with a fragmented supply chain.

  • Zero Dimensional Hand-Off Risk: When a separate foundry and machine shop blame each other for an out-of-spec part, the customer loses. By managing the transition from raw casting/forging directly into our CNC fixtures, we guarantee final dimensional accuracy.
  • Optimized Near-Net Tooling: Our CNC engineers work directly with our foundry engineers to design castings and forgings with the exact optimal material allowance for machining, drastically reducing cycle times and material waste.
  • Single-Source Traceability: From the initial melt of the alloy to the final CNC-machined thread, ForceBeyond provides unified, end-to-end Material Test Reports (MTRs) and inspection data.

Comprehensive Secondary Operations & Surface Finishing

Precision machining is rarely the final step. ForceBeyond provides a complete suite of in-house secondary operations and protective surface finishes to ensure your component is fully assembly-ready.

  • Thermal Processing: Solution annealing, stress relieving, case hardening, and age hardening (e.g., H900 for 17-4 PH).
  • Protective & Aesthetic Coatings: Anodizing (Type II & III for Aluminum), Zinc and Chrome Plating, Black Oxide, Powder Coating, and E-Coating.
  • Specialized Treatments: Chemical Passivation and Electropolishing for sanitary stainless steel and medical components.
  • Sub-Assembly & Packaging: Inserting helicoils, pressing bearings, custom kitting, and specialized packaging for global logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions: Precision CNC Machining

What is the advantage of 5-Axis CNC milling?

Traditional 3-axis milling requires a part to be manually un-clamped, rotated, and re-fixtured to machine different sides, which introduces dimensional errors. A 5-axis machine can manipulate the cutting tool and the part across five different axes simultaneously. This allows us to machine highly complex shapes (like aerospace impellers) in a single setup, guaranteeing vastly superior alignment, tighter tolerances, and faster cycle times.

Why is machining Inconel 718 or Titanium so difficult?

These aerospace superalloys have extremely high strength, poor thermal conductivity (meaning the heat stays in the cutting tool rather than leaving with the metal chip), and they work-harden rapidly as they are cut. Machining them requires immense machine rigidity, highly specialized carbide or ceramic inserts, precise feed rates, and high-pressure coolant systems to prevent catastrophic tool failure.

Do you machine parts from solid billet, or only castings/forgings?

We do both. For lower volume runs or parts with simple geometries, we frequently CNC machine directly from solid bar stock or billet. For mid-to-high volume runs or highly complex geometries, we leverage our Tier-1.5 model to cast or forge a near-net shape first, and then utilize our CNC centers to machine the final critical tolerances.
